An attempt at a titanium Deuce
4 Stars
An attempt at a titanium Deuce
Personally, I'm a big fan of anything and everything titanium. Not that I hate aluminum, I just enjoy the various benefits titanium offers. I'm also not quite at the extreme end of the ultralight community. As pictured, this is essentially another The Deuce replica. Although parts of it are at least shaped differently and a sawtooth edge was added. The 'rainbow' side, which appears to be the same side for everyone, has kind of a weird shine to it; a noticeably smoother finish than the other side. Not quite sure why, as I'm sure there was some post processing done for smoothing all the sharp edges, likely using a tumbler. I say this because even the sawtooth edge is also well rounded and basically not at all sharp. After a few minutes tooling around in the dirt, you can see the finish already coming off as in the second picture. Granted, this is California clay, rather than soil.Handling is 'okay' as it managed to cut into the ground about as well as anything else. Since it is titanium, it is thinner than an aluminum equivalent. A benefit to digging into the ground, but a detriment to the edges digging into your hand. The sawtooth edge is practically useless with its overly rounded edges, but this could probably be solved with a little work with a needle file. For the ultralight crowd, this is 1.5 oz compared to the 0.5 oz of the Deuce. Doesn't really bring much in the way of new features or design either. The holes in the handle were probably only added to reduce the weight slightly, rather than making it useful for lashing to a pole or something. Definitely some missed opportunities to improve a design. For the titanium crowd, unless you really like the Deuce-like design, I would stick with the Vargo Dig Dig tool. The rounded top edge is a huge improvement, and the saw is more functional getting through roots. All of the items mentioned here are all in the ~$20 range anyway, so it's really down to preference.
